"Wake the Dead" is the eleventh episode of Justice League Unlimited and features the return of Solomon Grundy and Shayera Hol. It originally aired on December 18, 2004.

Plot

A group of students at the "Louisiana University" performing a sort of magic ritual to get even with some bullies. Candles are lit and the floor is decorated with some rune while a spell is spoken. A dark cloud comes out of the floor in the middle of the rune, but one of students stumbles backwards because of a menacing face and breaks the circle. The cloud and the face disappear and all the candles are blown out. The students call the ritual a "rip" and lament future bullying. Two of the three students leave and while the third starts picking up, someone starts pounding on the door. Before the student can open it a large white arm crashes through and grabs the student by the head.

Shayera Hol and Aquaman are playing a game of chess with Amazo watching in the tower of Dr. Fate. Aquaman goads Hol and tries to provoke her. He wins the game and says an old English seaman's cheer, "Huzzah!" before taunting Hol more. She walks away saying, "It's just a game" and Aquaman throws the chessboard aside. Dr. Fate appears as Aquaman wonders at what happened to the Hol he knew as a fierce warrior. Fate tells him that he provided her sanctuary after she left the Justice League following the events in Starcrossed so that she could "find her way." Fate then excuses himself when he senses something. Amazo then challenges Aquaman to a new game of chess.

Hol enters the place where she's staying by way of one of Dr. Fate's dimensional doorways and Fate's wife, Inza, is seen tending to a garden. Hol mentions that Aquaman thinks that she has been there too long and Inza reminds her that she'll know when to leave.

At a fashion show, Vixen walks down the catwalk and winks at her guest and boyfriend, John Stewart. They meet backstage where Stewart tells her that their dinner is canceled for Justice League business. She comes out in her costume and Stewart transforms in his Green Lantern costume. They fly to the trouble spot to see a police car being thrown through the air. Lantern catches and lowers it to safety while Vixen runs to the scene. Solomon Grundy has returned and appears stronger than ever. He easily defeats the Green Lantern and is about to attack Vixen before Superman arrives. Superman tries to reason with Grundy who seems beyond communication. He attacks Superman and seems to be getting the upper hand.

Back at Dr. Fate's tower, Amazo defeats Aquaman at chess again and they prepare for another game. Dr. Fate appears and informs them that Solomon Grundy left his grave by way of "chaos magic" and has more power than ever before. When Shayera Hol appears she says that they have to help Grundy before the Justice League kills him. Fate opens a "pocket dimension" so that Hol and retrieve her "magic-disrupting" mace.

Grundy continues to pound on Superman and a punch sends Superman under a bridge support. As it seems that the bridge will collapse, Aquaman surfaces atop an enormous Octopus-looking creature who stablizes the bridge. Hawkgirl swoops in to save a mother and her daughter as their car falls off the bridge. All of the heroes meet waterside to plan the next step.

Superman suggests he, Fate, and "the android" tackle Grundy first. Hawkgirl asks for a chance to reason with Grundy given their shared past (see The Terror Beyond). Grundy is beyond reason and he slams her into a wall. The heroes attack and Amazo finally says that he will end it. Hawkgirl tries to intervene, but Amazo proceeds only to find the Grundy siphons off his power. He teleports light years away until he can find a solution. The heroes attack again.

They are getting beat again until Hawkgirl hits Grundy with her mace. She gets the upper hand and smashes him through the street to the sewers below. The heroes reconvene and Fate reminds them and this Grundy has nothing to do with the Grundy they knew, that he is an empty shell of rage. They agree that Grundy must be destroyed with Hawkgirl's mace. The Green Lantern offers to do it, but Hawkgirl insists on doing it herself. She flies down and finds Grundy sitting. She tells him to close his eyes and raises her mace.

An anxious Green Lantern is pacing and Superman says he's about to go in, but Hawkgirl flies out. She tells the group that it's done. A crowd has gathered and a reporter then asks Hawkgirl is she thinks her help here will help her get back into the Justice League after her "complicity in the Thanagarian invasion." Green Lantern reveals to the reporter that Hawgirl was never dismissed from the League and that she is welcomed back any time. He then discloses the result of the vote of the founding members following the Thanagarian invasion. Superman admits his was the tiebreaking vote.

Before they leave, Hawkgirl is taunted by some in the crowd as a "traitor" and she admits that she deserves it. The mother and little girl that she saved from the bridge then grab her hand and say, "God bless you, Chica Halcon. You saved our lives." And the Green Lantern says, "You deserve that, too." And the heroes walk away.

Continuity

  • This episode marks the return of Shayera Hol to the Justice League since leaving the group after the events of "Starcrossed" and the Thanagarian invasion.

Background Information

Trivia

  • This episode pays homage to the old Marvel superheroes-as-outsiders team, the Defenders. In the comics the Defenders included Dr. Strange, the Hulk, Nighthawk, the Sub-Mariner, and the Silver Surfer among others. The respective counterparts in this episode are Dr. Fate, Solomon Grundy, Hawkgirl, Aquaman, and Amazo. A similar homage team was assembled for "The Terror Beyond".
  • The result of the vote of the original six members of the Justice League on the fate of Hawkgirl following "Starcrossed" is revealed — she was going to be allowed to continue as a member of the Justice League. Superman cast the tiebreaking vote and the Green Lantern recused himself.
  • This is the last appearance of Amazo.
  • Louisiana University, where the students perform the ritual that raises Solomon Grundy, is fictitious, but the shot of the school at the beginning of the scene resembles the actual Louisiana State University campus.
