- A former member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Jay's distinctive deep voice and tall, gaunt looks often landed him villain roles in both live and voice-over roles.
- Television audiences often recognize him as the disfigured villain Paracelsus in the series Beauty and the Beast (opposite Ron Perlman, Linda Hamilton and Roy Dotrice), and as Nigel St. John, Lex Luthor's right-hand man on Lois & Clark.
- Two of his most prominent voice-over roles include the virus Megabyte in the animated series ReBoot, as well as Judge Claude Frollo, the main antagonist of Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
