"Static Shaq" is the fourth episode of the second season of Static Shock. It first aired on February 16, 2002, and stars Shaquille O'Neal as himself.
Plot[]
Virgil stops a new gang of metahuman thugs called the "Ruffpack," who, after being tired of always being stopped by Static, vow to take him out for good.
Just after stopping the Ruffpack, Virgil gets an emergency call from his dad to come to the Freeman Community Center immediately—upon finally getting to the community center, Virgil's older sister, Sharon, informs him that their dad wants the two of them to meet an old friend of his. At first, Virgil assumes that it's going to be a friend of their dad's from back when he was in the Marines, but it turns out that their dad's friend is none other than NBA superstar, Shaquille O'Neal, who's going to be running a mini-basketball camp and who asks to be called "Shaq" after Sharon initially addresses him as "Mr. O'Neal." After Sharon and Virgil question how their dad and Shaq know each other, the two explain when Shaq was around Virgil's age, he attended a basketball camp where Robert Hawkins (who Shaq refers to as "Mr. H") happened to be working as one of the counselors.
At a private party held by Shaq, the Ruffpack strikes after Ferret sniffs out Virgil, who is attending the party along with his father, his sister, and Richie. The four escape along with Shaq in a limo, retreating back to Virgil's house. The next morning, Virgil and Shaq sneak out the back and head to the old community center (which Virgil claims is now mostly used for storage) where the pair play some one-on-one streetball. However, the Ruffpack strikes again, and Virgil is forced to reveal his alter ego to Shaq, as the pair work together to take down the troublemakers. In the end, they manage to defeat the Ruffpack, and Shaq ultimately agrees to keep Virgil's superhero identity a secret.

Production notes[]

Kids' WB promotional flyer for "The New Adventures of Static Shaq."
- This episode was created under Kids' WB's suggestion.[1] The network even brought Shaq in to shoot green screen footage for a series of bumpers they promoted as "The New Adventures of Static Shaq" which aired alongside episodes of the first season as a means of building interest in the upcoming crossover.[2][3]
Production inconsistencies[]
- Virgil's pants are colored brown instead of gray like the rest of his suit in the first scene where Richie and Virgil are at the buffet table as Ferret is searching for Static.
- Static blows up a fire extinguisher which creates a fireball despite the fact that the foam in a fire extinguisher is supposed to prevent fires.
Trivia[]

"Static Shaq" promotional piece.
- As with many other guest star episodes of Static Shock, this one received its own promotional art piece.
- Dwayne McDuffie has stated he thought this episode "is better than a guest celebrity episode has any right to be."[4]
- Shaq was a fan of the Static comic when it was originally published.[5]
