"No Man's an Island" is the sixth episode of the fourth season of Static Shock. It premiered on February 21, 2004.
Synopsis[]
Static and Hotstreak are captured and taken to a mysterious island for scientific experiments. Now they have one goal: to escape the island alive.
Plot[]
The episode begins with a recap of what happened in the events of "Junior," showing what happened to Edwin Alva, Jr./Omnifarious. Edwin Jr. is still a stone statue thanks to the effects of a Quantum Vapor overdose, but he is still alive.
In the present, Virgil calls up Frieda to see if she or Daisy want to hang out. Frieda and Daisy are doing makeovers and candle-making, so Virgil passes. He adds that he would be hanging out with Richie, but Richie has been gone the whole weekend. The sound of a siren interrupts Virgil and he hangs up to find out what's happening. Hotstreak has stolen a sports car, and is joyriding it through the city. Static gives chase through the streets, trying to slow the car down with his powers. He manages to kill the car's engine, and Hotstreak pops out to attack Static. But, the fight is interrupted by some armed soldiers, who use a stun staff to knock out Hotstreak. Static lands his saucer to thank the soldiers, but they knock him out as well.
Later, Static wakes up in a cell aboard a hovercraft bound for an island laboratory. He has been handcuffed to Hotstreak, who is still unconscious. Static is unable to leave the cell, due to its electrical field hurting him when trying to short it. Hotstreak wakes up, and threatens Static to remove the handcuffs. But, he can't form any fireballs, nor can Static zap anything. Static figures that there are power dampeners in the cell. When the helicopter lands at the fortified facility, the armed guards from before come to collect the boys. Static tries to explain that he isn't a criminal, but gets zapped with the stun staff. Hotstreak goes to help Static up, but tells him that since they are out of the cell, they can attack the guards and run. Static agrees, but the two are unable to coordinate an attack, leading to friendly fire from Static and Hotstreak going overboard with his fireballs. This causes the hovercraft's controls to be damaged, and a key to the handcuffs to be melted. The link on the cuffs can't be melted, nor can the electronic locks be shorted. The escape attempt is interrupted by an unmanned drone blasting a hole in the ceiling of the hovercraft. This alerts more armed guards who chase Static and Hotstreak on flying scooters.
The pair manage to evade the guards for a while. But, they look into the window of a building and notice something. Rubberband Man, Talon, and Gear are all inside, unconscious and strapped to gurneys. Before Static can help them, the guards come back. He and Hotstreak try flying away, but they still can't cooperate enough to choose where to fly. Static manages to shoot down one of the guards and his jet scooter, but he and Hotstreak get shot down over some dense forest and fall into the trees. They recover and locate the downed jet scooter. Static juices it up, and the pair of them fly through the forest, but get chased by droids. Hotstreak again threatens Static to take him off the island, but Static points out that they won't make it across the ocean on their damaged jet scooter. Their best bet is to save the other metahumans and steal a working hovercraft to leave. Hotstreak agrees with this idea, and shoots down the lead droid to get the other droids of their backs.
Back at the building where the metahumans are being held, Static and Hotstreak sneak in. The building is similar to a hospital, which makes Hotstreak afraid. He admits that he was forced to stay in a hospital for two years as a child. Static convinces Hotstreak to keep moving, saying he will be there longer if they are caught. They then notice doctors and armed guards moving the sedated metahumans and the petrified Edwin Jr. to another area. The lead doctor is speaking with Edwin Alva, Sr., saying that the procedure might work this time, but it may kill the three metahumans. Alva says the three metahumans are disposable, and he just wants his son to be cured. Rubberband Man, Talon, and Gear are brought to a lab with large machines that will draw out the Quantum Vapor energy in their bodies and transfer them into Edwin Jr., hopefully reversing the effects of his petrification.
Static and Hotstreak sneak into the lab, where Static notices a nurse with a handcuff key. While the doctors begin the procedure, the pair sneak closer, and slip the key from the nurse's belt. After unlocking the cuffs, Hotstreak loudly exclaims his joy, alerting the guards. Static gets zapped by a laser gun and passes out, while Hotstreak attacks the guards and makes a run for it. Alva demands the energy transfer start. The machines begin to draw the energy from the three other metahumans, causing them great pain. Static wakes up, and draws some power from the machine, blasting away the guards, then shutting down the transfer machine. He wakes the other metahumans and releases them from the gurneys. Alva orders all of his guards to capture the metahumans. The metahumans fight the guards, but they are vastly outnumbered. But before the metahumans get overwhelmed, Alva arrives in the lab, telling the troops to stand down. Behind him is Hotstreak, threatening him with a fireball. The troops obey.
Gear then notices that Edwin, Jr.'s vital signs are dropping on the monitors. Static asks to be hooked up to the machine so he can use his power for the energy transfer. The doctor says it might work, but Gear warns that Static may lose his powers for good. Static is willing to take the risk if it means saving Edwin. He gets strapped to the device and it begins to painfully sap his energy. The doctor says its not enough. Hotstreak offers to get into another gurney and offer his energy. Hotstreak's help, as well as some recalibration from Gear, restores Edwin, Jr. to normal. The father and son hug, and Alva thanks Static and Hotstreak for their help. Static insists that he helped because it was the right thing to do. Hotstreak adds that Alva should try doing the right thing sometime, confusing Static.
Later, Alva drops the metahumans off in Dakota on a hovercraft, right next to the stolen sports car from earlier. Static asks if he and Hotstreak should resume their fight, but Hotstreak declines, having found a better ride. Alva apparently gave Hotstreak permission to joyride the hovercraft as thanks. Static and the others watch as Hotstreak drives the hovercraft into the night, whooping with joy.
