New Gods

The New Gods of New Genesis.

A New God was an alien deity that hailed from one of two extra-dimensional worlds — New Genesis, led by one called Highfather, and Apokolips, ruled by one called Darkseid. Together, the beings of these worlds comprised the two equal and opposing forces of the New Gods' pantheon- New Genesis representing virtue and light, Apokolips representing darkness and evil.

History[]

Many New Gods had powers that function in a manner similar to those of Earth's superhuman community, ranging from self-powered flight to projection of energy blasts. New Gods rely on advanced technology as much as they do their own inherent powers and abilities. Often this technology, such as the Mother Box, bordered on the magical.

The respective natures of the New Gods of New Genesis and Apokolips resulted in a war that has lasted untold ages. The conflict was, in the past, temporarily abated by a pact engaged by Highfather and Darkseid, wherein the two rulers exchanged their own infant sons in the name of peace. Some time after their children had become adults, Darkseid broke the pact, renewing their ancient hostilities. With the death, resurrection and later disappearance of Darkseid, the state of the war, as well as the claim to the throne of Apokolips, remains unknown.

Background information[]

The New Gods were created by Jack Kirby as part of the Fourth World series, debuting in the pages of Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen. The New Gods were then brought into the mainstream DC universe, with Darkseid becoming one of Superman's major rogues.

During Countdown to Final Crisis, the New Gods were killed as the Source hoped to create a Fifth World. However, Darkseid and his minions recently resurfaced on Earth.
