John Corben was a mercenary and hit man who became the cyborg Metallo.

History

Corben was once a mercenary and assassin working in the underworld. He was seen taking hire for the best employers, one of those employers being Lex Luthor. When Corben traveled to Metropolis, he was hired by Luthor to steal the Lexo-Skel Suit 5000, a super robot armor built by LexCorp, to sell it to terrorists hailing from Kaznia. However, Superman learned this and went to stop Corben. Corben commanded the robot to attack Superman, but he was eventually defeated and the robot destroyed. Superman took Corben to prison by the scruff of the neck like a kid.

A few months later, Corben, spending his time in prison, was badly suffering of a rare disease only known in South America. Lex Luthor helped him escape from prison by detonating a bomb at Stryker's Prison. At LexCorp, Corben was offered a deal: he would gain inmortality and invulnerability if he transfered his mind into an android body - one that was charged with a Kryptonite heart - and he would get his revenge on Superman. Corbin agreed and was fascinated about this change, but he then learned that he no longer could smell, eat or feel, not even a simple kiss. Corben went insane and, ripping away part of his artificial skin and revealing his robotic self, he became Metallo.

Thirsty for revenge, Metallo went to Lex Luthor's boat, where he faced Luthor, knowing that he used a corrupt scientist to infect him with the disease in prison. Metallo wanted to kill Lex, but Superman intervened and Metallo weakened him with his Kryptonite heart. However, Luthor's boat soon exploded and Metallo was stranded beneath the sea.

Having survived, Metallo resurfaced in a volcanic island, where he found two children, without any memory of his former self. The children confused him with a superhero because of his metallic appearance, but even as his memories returned, he decided to trick and use them for his schemes. Superman arrived to investigate the volcano's predicted eruption. Metallo went after him, seeking vengeance, and nearly got it, even as the confused kids protested at seeing their hero attacking Superman. This distracted him from the struggle, allowing Superman to throw his Kryptonite heart into the flowing lava. He desperately went after it, but wound up encased in the cooled lava, unable to move or even see - only able to focus on his own identity, determined not to lose it again.

Metallo returned, now improved and technologically advanced by Intergang, and went after Superman once more. However, John Henry Irons, a former employee of LexCorp, helped Superman to defeat him. He later enlisted Tina, a former journalist from Daily Planet, to kidnap Superman. Fortunately, Jimmy Olsen learned of this and went to the Metropolis Junkyard to rescue Superman. Metallo and Superman battled again in a demolition machine, resulting in Metallo apparently being crushed by falling debris.

Metallo survived once again, however, and returned to Metropolis to found the Superman Revenge Squad with Livewire, Toyman, Kalibak and Weather Wizard. They caused a lot of chaos and destruction and Metropolis SCU couldn't stop them. However, the Justice League intervined and Metallo was beaten by J'onn J'onzz. He and the other villains were delivered to the authorities.

When Grodd founded the Legion of Doom, Metallo joined. His latest mission was to go along with Silver Banshee to Skartaris in order to assist the dictator Deimos at his reign of terror and in exchange, retrieve a chunk of Kryptonite. However, the Justice League intervined to help Travis Morgan to stop Deimos. Metallo battled Stargirl and lost an arm. He then battled Supergirl, who grabbed a knife and removed Metallo's Kryptonite heart.

Metallo was taken to a cave where he was briefly interrogated by Green Lantern about who sent him. Metallo was about to talk, but his mind was mysteriously shut down by an unknown source. His motionless body was later taken to Watchtower, to see if J'onn could probe some information from his mind.

His final fate is currently unknown.
