"My family and loved ones are long gone. I am the last of my kind. Now, Mars is dead, and I am alone in the universe."
J'onn J'onzz[1]

Martians are inhabitants of the planet Mars. Due to the Imperium invasion, the entire Martian population was wiped out by the Imperium, except for J'onn J'onzz.

History

It was a golden age as the Martian civilization was at the height of its peace and prosperity, but it was desolated a thousand years ago by the Imperium. The invaders were determined to make the planet their own. Although they were a peaceful people, the Martians quickly learned the ways of war. For centuries, the battles raged on as every trace of the once-great civilization Was obliterated. The Martians fought valiantly, but the invaders were parasites who fed on their psychic energy. As the Martians grew weaker, the invaders grew stronger and absorbed their shape-changing abilities. Finally, a small group of Martian survivors planned one final desperate attack. Inside an underground stronghold, the Martians unleashed a powerful nerve gas which paralyzed the Imperium. The attack was successful, but the cost was dear as J'onn J'onzz was the only survivor, the last of his kind.[1]

Martians are stronger and more durable than humans, capable of shapeshifting, super strength, intangibility and flight, can adapt to various environments including that of Earth, and are telepathic. Martians have two genders, and marriage and familial relationships are apparently similar to those of humans.

It seems Martian males and human males do have similarities in their genes as Aresia's antigen, which was made to only target males, affected J'onn as well.

Background information

In the DC comics, there are two distinct Martian races, the Green Martians, which are what the DCAU Martians are based on, and the White Martians. The two were once a single race, but their belligerence led the Guardians of the Universe to separate them into two species: the Greens became a race of peaceful philosophers, while the Whites became a race of savage warriors. One of the Whites, M'gann M'orzz, rejected her species violent culture and joined the Teen Titans.
