Simmons is known for his portrayals as Emil Skoda in Law & Order, Vernon Schillinger in HBO's Oz and J. Jonah Jameson in the live-action Spider-Man films. Along with television and cinema roles, Simmons also does voice work such as the Yellow M&M (with Billy West as Red and Cree Summer as Green) and Martin Smarty in Kim Possible.

In 2014, he received critical acclaim for his performance in the film Whiplash, which won him a Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He also portrays James Gordon in the live-action film Justice League.
