Bruce Wayne consulted Elliot and Hartness about whether Wayne Technologies Optical Research Laboratories could be responsible for the unknown "invisible man" causing trouble in Gotham City, having heard in the past of an invisibility project Wayne Tech Optical Research Labs was potentially undertaking. Hartness told Bruce he was thinking of the inventor Karos, who had approached the company with an offer to go into business with him, developing plastic that could turn invisible, but ultimately withdrew the offer. After Elliot informed Bruce that Karos had since died, Hartness said that he had heard Sam Giddell, one of Karos' assistants, had been trying to carry on his research.
