Supergirl

Supergirl was the last Argoan and Superman's foster cousin. Kara In-Ze was the only survivor from Krypton's sister planet, Argo. While exploring the sector of space once occupied by Krypton, Superman discovered a hidden cryogenic facility which had sustained heavy damage. Only one chamber was intact, containing the last survivor of Argo: Kara. Taking the young woman back to Earth, Superman introduced Kara to his adoptive parents. The Kents took her in under the guise of Jonathan Kent's teenaged niece.

Inspired by her "cousin" Clark, Kara made a costume similar to Superman's and occasionally joined on missions as Supergirl. Kara frequently visited Clark in Metropolis and, as Supergirl, she had full access to Superman's Fortress of Solitude. In Supergirl, Superman found a living link to his alien heritage, and someone he could talk to about his dual lives as Superman and Clark Kent. She became a frequent friendly ally who could be trusted with Superman's secret. (Read more...)

Ten (Walker Family)

Melanie Walker, otherwise known as the criminal Ten, was the daughter of the leaders of the Royal Flush Gang. Ten was initiated into her life of crime at an early age, and as a consequence she had no friends and was constantly "uproot[ed] every few weeks". She eventually grew weary of her lifestyle, becoming the only malcontent member of the gang. Ten played a vital role in the team, as she was in charge of overriding the security systems of the places they robbed. Melanie was notably less cold-blooded and ruthless than her father and was much more humane; she seemed gentle, empathetic, smart, level-headed, honorable, somewhat outspoken, reliable, and trustworthy enough. Lost and Found

"Lost and Found" is the sixth episode of Season 2 of The Zeta Project, written by award-winning writer Randy Rogel. After a fight with Krick, Zeta's memory cards are shattered and he relives his last day in government service, while Ro relates what her life was like before meeting Zeta.

An angry Krick chases Zee and Ro near Ryedale. Krick still carries a grudge over their first encounter, and plans to kill Zeta. His car is considerably faster than the hoverbike used by Zee and Ro, and he slowly gains on them. Wildly firing at them, Krick hits the foundations of a water tower instead. It collapses. Zeta turns the hoverbike to save a boy from being crushed, but immediately after, something messes up his eyesight. It only lasts seconds until he completely powers down, and reverts to his robotic form. Ro manages to gain control of the bike, and evades Krick by turning in an alley. She comes to a standstill on a bridge. Krick, having also wrecked his ride, goes after them on foot. Out of options, Ro pushes Zeta on the roof of a passing train and jumps on the last car. Anansi

A superhero is a term used to define a person or creature who uses power, ability, or technology beyond that of the general public, in the pursuit of good. They are often opposed by supervillains.

Superheroes come in various types:

  • regular vigilantes who use natural prowess, advanced technology, or a combination of the two
  • magic-users or extraterrestrials who use abnormal powers
  • metahumans or bang babies
  • regular human beings who use alien or magical technology

While vigilantes and rogue policemen have existed for millennia, it wasn't until the Old West era in the western America that the first costumed crimefighters appeared. The costumed superhero El Diablo hid his identity while fighting alongside other vigilantes, such as Bat Lash and Sheriff Ohiyesa Smith.

By the 1940s, the idea of costumed superheroes was still far-fetched in the minds of American soldiers, although at least one costumed vigilante helped out during World War II: Spy Smasher. (Read more...)

Bucky

Bucky Buenaventura was a young technological genius. He was the son of scientists and inventors Rudy and Gloria Buenaventura. Born and raised in New Mexico, Bucky soon found he was considerably smarter than his parents, and had to fix all their faulty contraptions. Instead of seeing him as a good thing, they were unable to handle him. So his parents sent Bucky to the Sorben Institute.

At the Sorben Institute, he came to a conflict with the others - he was by far the youngest, and arguably the smartest of the scientists employed by the Institute. One of his most powerful inventions - the Inductance Controller - caused his temporary banishment from the institute as a trial run in dean Donald Tannor's office caused all the machinery to go haywire.

On his way out, he first saw Zeta. Upon hearing the synthoid's speech synthesizer, Bucky concluded that Zeta was a robot, and hacked NSA files to find out more. Upon seeing Zeta's schematics, he though it'd be a good way to get back at everyone at the Institute. With his Inductance Controller, he hijacked Zeta's motor functions. At first, he used Zeta's weapons to destroy his colleagues' inventions, but after he learned Tannor stole the Controller's designs to win the Innovation Awards, he turned his attention to his former dean. Angered, he set Zeta on Tannor, intending to scare him into admitting that he stole his invention and others, which he broadcasted to the entire fair. He then had Zeta advance on Tannor, but Ro took control of Tannor's remote to knock Bucky down. Zeta then brought up his saw blades and scared Bucky into promising that he would never use his remote again. (Read more...)

BigBangBoom

The Big Bang was a chemical explosion in the docks of Dakota that forever changed the city. In its wake, hundred of "Bang Babies", metahumans with varying powers and abilities, roamed the streets.

What was originally to be a showdown between all major gangs of the city became a disaster after the police arrived. A stray tear gas grenade hit vats of the mysterious mutagenic chemical Quantum Vapor, which filled the docks and surrounding area with a thick purple smoke. The next morning, many woke up distinctively altered, and most returned to their life of crime, using their newfound powers in their favor. Luckily, one Bang Baby, Static, decided to fight crime instead. (Read more...)

Robin's Reckoning-Title Card

"Robin's Reckoning" is a two-part episode of Batman: The Animated Series. The first part originally aired on February 7, 1993, followed by the second part on the 14th. The episodes depict the origin of Robin (Dick Grayson). A mobster named Tony Zucco, who killed Robin's parents, returns. Batman refuses to allow Dick Grayson to use the persona of Robin to apprehend him. Batman launches an investigation, searching for Zucco, which is paralleled by Robin's own investigation, unbeknownst to the Dark Knight. As the search narrows to an abandoned theme park, a series of flashbacks tell Robins origin story and how he came to live with Bruce Wayne.

This installment was based on the comics story from Detective Comics #38 (April 1940), and the first part won an Emmy award for Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming Less Than One Hour). Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale have stated that this episode inspired a great part of their later successful comic Batman: Dark Victory. (Read more...)

Joker plays the shrink

"Mad Love" is the series finale of The New Batman Adventures, and aired on January 11, 1999. It provides the back story of Harley Quinn, the Joker's girlfriend, and was based on the comic book of the same name, also by Paul Dini.

Commissioner Gordon goes in for a dental appointment, only to find the Joker in the place of his dentist. Harley Quinn ties him to the chair, and just as Joker is about to kill the Commissioner, Batman crashes in and saves Gordon, right after Joker and Harley escape.

In the Funnibones warehouse, the Joker is busy trying to come up with a plan to kill Batman, but Harley is looking for an assignation. The Joker spurns her sexual advances, though, because he's obsessed with getting back at Batman. He stumbles upon "The Death of A Thousand Smiles" — a plan that consisted of plopping Batman in a piranha tank — but he soon remembers that he had dropped it earlier because he was unable to get a smile out of the fish. Harley resumes her advances, so the Joker kicks her out. Outside with Bud and Lou, Harley bemoans about her life and asks herself how it came to that point. She concluded that Batman was to blame from the very beginning and starts reminiscing about her past. (Read more...)

Gordon and Barbara

The Broadcast Standards and Practices generally forbade references to religion – My God!, Oh, my God!, My Lord!... – especially when used as a curse, on cartoon shows. During the production of Batman: The Animated Series such references were very rare in an animated series. As time went on, it became more commonplace to use the phrase. The list of "God!" utterances in the DCAU catalogs the times in which this phrase and other variations has been spoken in the DC Animated Universe.

Klarion

Klarion was a young witch boy who once devastated Gotham City using the demon Etrigan. It is unknown how Klarion got into the use of magic but he soon came to like it. Spoiled by nature, he turned his parents into mice, and ran afoul on his own account. At some unknown point, Klarion crossed paths with Jason Blood and the two developed a feud. For no other reason than his own personal amusement, Klarion began addressing Blood as "Uncle Jason," despite not sharing kinship.

He somehow amassed a fortune great enough for him to bid $250,000 on a branding iron belonging to Morgaine Le Faye. During an auction he got into a bidding war with Jason Blood for the branding iron and managed to out bid him. However, Bruce Wayne stepped in and bid one million dollars for it. Unable to match the bid Klarion was forced to allow the branding iron to go to Wayne. However, he was not about to let it go so easily and sent his cat "Teekl" to retrieve it. Using a power granted by Klarion, Teekl was able to turn into a humanoid creature and managed to escape with the branding iron. (Read more...)

Apokolips... Now

"Apokolips... Now!" is the thirty-eighth and thirty-ninth episodes of Superman: The Animated Series. It depicts Darkseid's first attempt to take Earth into his possession. Orion comes to earth to warn Superman of the impending invasion. Together he and Superman manage to turn back the first wave of attack but after Orion leaves, another attack comes and Orion can't be contacted. Now Superman and the people of Earth must fight back the might of Apokolips alone.

It's a typical Metropolis night, the SCU escorts an armored truck into a heavily guarded building. The truck's cargo is revealed to be laundered money taken by Intergang and compensated by the SCU. Just then, criminals driving a high tech flying tank burst into the building. All attempts to stop the tank are futile. The tank lowers a tentacle and forces energy into Captain Maggie Sawyer's car causing it to explode and badly injuring her. The tank then takes the truck and makes its way out of the building.

Outside, Superman attacks the tank. At first it seems that he will succeed in defeating the tank but they fire a bomb that creates flash strong enough to disorient Superman. They then send out a device that produces a screech so loud, all glass in the city shatters and everyone who hears it is stricken with pain. Superman is also affected by the device and though he manages to destroy it, the criminals get away.

Back at Mannheim's house, he receives a holographic message from Darkseid, who is angry at Mannheim's petty use of his tank and destroys the loot. However, he leaves Mannheim unharmed and tells him that he will one day make him a king. (Read more...)

NinaCrocker

Nina Crocker, also known as Timezone and Flashback, was a Dakota teen with the power to travel time. Nina was a kid without any trouble in the world. One night, she took a bike ride past the docks of Dakota. Sadly, it was the night of the Big Bang, and Nina got caught by the gas.

Her powers did not manifest until later, and inspired by the good example of Static and Gear, she went to look them up. Ebon had gotten wind of her, however, and wanted to use her for his Meta-Breed. The ability to travel time would allow them an advantage over the police. He confronted Nina in an alley, but found the scene joined by Static and Gear. After a brief struggle, Nina transported them ten minuted into the past, and they made their getaway to the Abandoned Gas Station of Solitude.

Some time later in the park, Gear revealed Nina to Static, now in costume and calling herself Timezone. Visibly attracted to Gear, she let him explain everything to Static. They devised a plan to travel back in time and stop the riots from escalating. Before they could go, Ebon interrupted them and damaged the remote. They were all sucked into the past. (Read more...)

Katma Tui

Katma Tui was a senior Green Lantern and also the primary trainer of new recruits. Among many prominent members, Katma trained John Stewart, with whom she had a fleeting liaison, as well as Kyle Rayner.

Katma Tui led a group of Green Lanterns against the forces of Despero in Ranstad-7. When half of her team was decimated, she allowed herself to be captured only to permit Kilowog, the only remaining survivor, to flee and warn the Guardians. Katma Tui went undercover as one of Despero's priestesses to infiltrate his Cult and learn about his plans.

When John was impaired by Despero and lost control of his ring, Katma Tui resumed his training. However, her cold hearted and intolerant attitude repelled John. After freeing Kalanor from Despero, Katma offered John a place alongside her to help rebuild the planet, but she was turned down. (Read more...)

Renee Montoya

Renee Montoya was an officer and later a detective of the Gotham Police Department.

A young cop fresh to the force, Montoya was not sure what to think of the Batman, or costumed folk in general. Wisecracking and strict, she was ordered to guard Harvey Dent when he was poisoned. Though she did not catch the culprit, Pamela Isley, she would have several future encounters with her.

One of her first major assignments was a drug bust that ended up going disastrously wrong. She was originally supposed to meet Bullock, along with her partner, Officer Wilkes, at a warehouse and enter it together when a known druglord's men were inside. Instead, they arrived to find Bullock's car empty and the building on fire. As a pair of thugs burst from the building, Montoya told Wilkes to pursue them, and entered the warehouse alone. There, she confronted a squad of thugs by herself. One of the thugs disarmed her, and the rest attacked. Montoya stood her ground and actually fought them off for a while, but was close to being killed when Batman intervened and helped her defeat them. As she escaped the building, Batman was apparently knocked out or killed. Renee Montoya|(Read more...)

Terry's wings

Terry McGinnis' Batsuit was the final Batsuit ever made and worn by Batman. It was ultimately inherited by his Batman (Terry McGinnis)|successor.

This high-tech Batsuit was developed presumably to compensate for Bruce Wayne's advancing age. It was eventually passed on to Batman (Terry McGinnis)|Terry McGinnis when he assumed the mantle of the Batman. The Suit was almost 20 years old when Terry became Gotham's new savior; however, its technology was so advanced that the Suit was still considered state of the art. By the time Terry met Amanda Waller, he was still wearing this Suit.

It is largely unknown what Bruce used to build the Suit, except that he got its servo-motors from Dr. Peter Corso. Bruce combined and incorporated most of the features and concepts of previous costumes and other gadgets into this Suit, such as the flight capability of the Jet Wing, batarangs with auxiliary functions, grappling guns, bolas, and retractable claws, among other things. He also built in new features such as a cloaking device — possibly inspired by the light refractive polymer — although, this function probably consumed a good deal of the Suit's power, seeing as Terry minimized its usage. With this Suit, Batman had more versatility, as he was less dependent on portable gadgets, as well as less vulnerable to external adversities. (Read more...)

LordSuperman

In a parallel universe, Superman was a member of the Justice Lords. Justice Lord Superman's background matched his Justice League's counterpart, including his coming to Earth as a baby after the destruction of his homeworld of Krypton. Their backgrounds diverged with the election of Lex Luthor as President of the United States and the subsequent public execution of the Flash. Soon after, Superman, along with Batman and Wonder Woman, stormed the White House. While Batman and Wonder Woman battled the Secret Service, Superman slipped through to confront President Luthor in the Oval Office.

Despite Superman's accusations of abuse of power and such, Luthor refused to surrender and arrogantly stated that he would find a way to avoid prosecution. Luthor also called Superman his "greatest accomplice" for perpetuating a chase between the two that never ended. In response, Superman stated that if being a "hero" meant that the feuding and fighting had to continue, then he was done with it. He then used his heat vision, killing Luthor. (Read more...)

Joker ROTJ

The Joker was a supervillain who considered himself the comic counterpart to Batman. He was described as a homicidal maniac by both Batman and Batgirl, and was admitted into Arkham Asylum many times. He was Batman's deadliest enemy and a dangerous one of the Justice League.

An unknown man started out as a young enforcer working for the mob triad of Sal Valestra, Buzz Bronski, and Chuckie Sol. At one point early on, before his future accident, he and Bruce Wayne caught a glimpse of each other. One of his last jobs took place in Europe on the Mediterranean Coast. His target was Carl Beaumont, a businessman who had fled the states after the mob bosses discovered he'd embezzled a fortune.

Years later, the man formed his own gang and staged their first robbery at the Ace Chemical Plant. It was during this heist that he first encountered Batman. It's unknown whether the man was pushed or simply fell, but he did fall off a catwalk and into a drainage vat of chemical waste that washed him out into the river. The chemicals had an adverse effect on him: they dyed his hair green, his skin was bleached white, his clothes were dyed purple, and his lips were stretched into a permanently stained red grin. All this snapped the crook's already twisted mind and sadistic nature, giving birth to The Joker. Vowing to show the world the triumph of his comic genius, the career of one of history's most dangerous and intelligent psychopaths began. (Read more...)

Justice Lords

The Justice Lords were a trans-dimensional version of the Justice League. In a universe parallel to that of the Justice League's, the election of Lex Luthor as President of the United States and subsequent public execution of the Flash caused the super-hero team of that universe to go rogue. Though also composed of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, John Stewart, Hawkgirl, and J'onn J'onzz, this team stylized itself the Justice Lords and reogranized itself into a planet-wide ruling body, quickly beginning a program of protecting humanity from itself.

Once Earth was peaceful, Batman developed an interdimensional transport device which allowed him to view universes parallel to his own. The first universe he found was that of the Justice League, where his and the Lords' counterparts continued to battle a criminal Lex Luthor, the Flash was still alive, and they had not instilled order via harsh rule. Deciding to force their brand of order on the League's universe, the Justice Lords tricked and captured the League, imprisoning them in the Lords' universe while the Lords took their place. Cheetah

Cheetah was a genetically-modified human and criminal. Barbara Ann Minerva was a genetics scientist, exploring the possibilities of enhancing human capabilities with animal characteristics. Excited by the potential of her research, but without sufficient funding to continue, she was forced to use herself as a test subject, and transformed herself into a human-cheetah hybrid. She hoped to prove the value of her work, but instead made herself an outcast, and turned to crime as a source of continued funding. Batman described her as a person so devoted to her work that she was willing to give up her humanity for it; despite this, she is still insecure over her transformation and resents her outcast status.

Lex Luthor recruited Cheetah as a member of his Injustice Gang to destroy the Justice League. In their first attempt, Cheetah masqueraded as a hostage being held by Ultra-Humanite and then attacked when Batman was lured too close to her. (Read more...)

Knight Time

The Bat-signal was a searchlight on the roof of the Gotham Police Department used to summon Batman for help when necessary. Curiously, the first version of the Bat-signal was an impromptu contraption fashioned by simpleton Charlie Collins in a desperate attempt to attract the Dark Knight's attention. He did so by swinging an antique set of glider wings (shaped like a bat's) back and forth across a window. The actual Signal was eventually developed by Commissioner James Gordon, and first used to alert Batman to a puzzle delivered by Josiah Wormwood. Seeing it, Batman expressed concern that Gordon would get in trouble with Mayor Hill for installing it.

Though Gordon usually used the signal, others knew about it and sometimes used it as well. (Read more...)

She organized regular therapy sessions with him, during which he told her tales of a cruel father and an abusive childhood, mixed in with his early attempts at comedy. Cadmus

Project Cadmus was a secret division of the United States government dedicated to countering the power of metahumans in the world, particularly the members of the Justice League.

Cadmus's precise origins are unclear. According to General Hardcastle, the U.S. military and several major corporations had been collaborating for decades, experimenting on metahumans, extraterrestrials, and mutants, and hoarding advanced technology (human and alien), for both profit and defense. Their early efforts included Volcana, and the teenagers whom The Joker remade into the Royal Flush Gang. It has also been hinted that the "Big Bang" which occurred in the City of Dakota, which exponentially increased the metahuman population, was sanctioned, and possibly orchestrated, by the government and Edwin Alva. The Captain was one of the first new League members to be given an important assignment: investigating a radioactive accident in Communist Asia, alongside Supergirl and the John Stewart. Captain Atom's conduct as an USA military officer was too uptight for the lighthearted heroes like Kara and Green Arrow, which at first caused some animosity between them.

Poison Ivy (BTAS)

Poison Ivy was an eco-terrorist. Unlike most of Batman's rogues, Poison Ivy was less interested about money and power, instead focusing on equality for plant life. However, her somewhat ruthless tactics frequently landed her in Arkham Asylum.

Pamela Isley was a botanist researching in Gotham City when she met District Attorney Harvey Dent. Shortly after their meeting, the two began dating. This, of course, was before she poisoned him. Years earlier, Harvey had arranged for an area of land to be excavated to build a prison in his quest to clean Gotham. The land, however, was the only breeding ground for a rare breed of plant, gone into extinction after the excavation.

A personal friend of Dent's, Batman investigated the scene. He quickly deduced Isley's involvement in the poisoning. Isley (revealing her preference for the moniker "Poison Ivy") had saved one sample of the rare plant, and from it created a toxin and an antidote. After some wordplay and (in Ivy's eyes) a hostage negotiation, Batman managed to secure the antidote, save Harvey's life, and commit Poison Ivy to Arkham Asylum. (Read more...)

Batman Beyond - Return of the Joker
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker is a direct-to-video animated feature based on the Batman Beyond series. It is noteworthy for resolving the conflict between the Joker and the original Batman, as well as introducing the Joker into the Batman Beyond timeframe. Also resolved was the fate of the second Robin, Tim Drake.

While the feature is quite popular among DCAU fans, many of whom cite it as the animated universe's storytelling apotheosis, its release was plagued by controversy. Scenes dubbed too intense for young audiences were altered or outright removed from the film's first incarnation, in some cases drastically changing the mood of a scene, and when fan unrest led to an uncut version being released over a year later, it was given a PG-13 rating. Mr. Freeze's new body

Kryptonite

Kryptonite was the name coined by Emil Hamilton for radioactive fragments of the destroyed planet Krypton. This substance had immediate detrimental effects on Kryptonians and Argosians, as well as long term effects on humans.

When Krypton exploded, its fragments flew into space in every direction, with several fragments following Kal-El's spacecraft to Earth.

The existence of Kryptonite was first discovered shortly after Superman's first public appearance in Metropolis. Early tests were conducted by LexCorp scientists, and further tests by Professor Hamilton, who theorized that the low-level radiation generated by the element was a result of the explosion that destroyed Krypton. Fragments found on Earth varied in size from small slivers to pieces several feet across.

Kryptonite's most noteworthy effect was that it could sap the strength of super-powered Kryptonians. Prolonged exposure to its radiation could quickly lead to death. Kryptonite was also painful to the touch for Kryptonians, and it was the only known non-magical substance that could pierce Superman's normally invulnerable skin. (Read more...)

Inque

Inque was one of Terry McGinnis's first foes. Her origins and background remain unknown, but it is known that she was born into extreme poverty. Her precarious lifestyle eventually instilled in her an obsession with money, and that quickly became her raison d'être. She decided to take the easy way out and turned to the life of crime. At some point, she allowed herself to become a biohazard, allegedly for a substantial amount of money. From that point on, Inque put her talents for hire and became corporate saboteur.

Inque looked like a regular human, except for her tones of blue. Whenever she went undercover, she assumed a featureless form, with an white oval on her face, making her unrecognizable.

Inque was a polymorph, able to change her size and shape at will. Her body was a thick dark fluid that she could shape into a wide variety of forms, and harden herself to create weapons. She could form tentacles, flatten herself into a puddle, and reintegrate herself if cut into pieces. She had super strength and the ability to climb up walls and ceilings. Inque also possessed telescopic vision.

Inque's liquid body was subject to dilution in water, and solvents had an adverse effect on her physiology. She would lose the ability to change shape if frozen. (Read more...)

Captain Atom

Captain Atom was a superhero and a member of the Justice League. He was composed of living nuclear energy and had to be confined to his containment suit to interact with others.
