Over the years, there have been several comic book series set in the DCAU. The majority of these tie-in comics were created by different teams than the crew who worked on the animated shows, while a select few comics shared creatives with the DCAU shows.

    • To promote their Superman: The Animated Series themed Kids Club Meal, Burger King commissioned a one page comic as a print ad.

Canonicity and continuity

While show crew were occasionally hired to work on the tie-in material, they ultimately lacked influence on the comic titles outside of the issues they were assigned to write or draw. Bruce Timm would note:

"We didn't have any direct input on the comics...DC never solicited our opinions on what they were doing, nor would we have had time to give them notes if they had--I learned very early on not to get my nose bent out of joint if they did something in the comics we would never have done--my own personal way of dealing with it was to consider only the animated episodes themselves as true canon-which means that even Mad Love wasn't purely canonical until we adapted it for the animated series.[3]"

As a result, this led to an environment where the tie-in crew had freedom in storytelling. As explained by Batman Adventures writer/editor Scott Peterson:

"Rather than simply adapt the shows that Paul Dini, Bruce Timm, and the rest of their team had already produced, Kelley Puckett, Mike Parobeck, Rick Burchett, Ty Templeton, and I tried to do what Paul and Bruce had done: lift directly what we could from the source material (in our case, the animated show; In their case, our original comics), regretfully abandon what wouldn't translate effectively from one medium to the other, and try most of all to re-create the magic the animated guys had captured so effortlessly[14]"

As recalled by Adam Beechen, this method of production would continue throughout to the Justice League Unlimited tie-in series:

"writing Justice League Unlimited was so wonderful, because I was beholden only to the animated series' continuity (and even then, only slightly, as we hardly ever referenced it), and because I was the only one working with those characters and that continuity. I could tell the stories I wanted without having to check with a hundred different people first.[15]"

However, while this led to critically acclaimed stories, the lack of involvement between camps has led to the continuity of the tie-in material being brought into question over the years. Peterson would state:

"We tried to follow the show's continuity and tried not to contradict anything.[...] While we'd occasionally try to do an issue that specifically came before or after a certain episode, in general, we just concentrated on not contradicting anything."[3]"

Despite this, as the DCAU continued to grow, many titles would retroactively become incompatible with the events that transpired on screen. A myriad of characters appeared before their Animated counterparts, and substantially different—most notably Superman, Lex Luthor (Batman Adventures #25), Huntress (Batman & Robin Adventures #19), Kyle Rayner, Aquaman (Adventures in the DC Universe #1), Amazo and Chronos (Justice League Adventures #6).

Furthermore, Timm would note elsewhere that the tie-in continuity was it's own thing concerning the comics, but on rare occasion could be subsumed into the on-screen continuity if it served the producers purposes.

"The comic book animated continuity is actually different than the actual animated continuity- they'll do things that contradict what we do and vice versa. But for the sake of the Demon story we did iin the animated show, we subsumed the annual we had done into the animated continuity just to get things moving faster. We didn't have to have them meet and slow the story down. The story starts as a fait accompli; they've already met each other off-stage and have some history together.[16]"

Other characters that first appeared in DCAU tie-in comics written by animation staff, such as Roxy Rocket (introduced in Batman Adventures Annual #1) would not receive this treatment when being brought to the screen. In some notable cases, even if a comic project was worked on by an animation writer, it still may not fit the animated continuity. One such case includes "Batman Adventures: The Holiday Special

"We wanted to adapt the Mr. Freeze story that Glen Murakami had drawn for the holiday special-but unfortunately, in between BTAS and TNBA Boyd Kirkland and Randy Rogel had brought the 'late' Mrs. Fries back to life in their movie SubZero, so we couldn't. Yes. SubZero was absolutely canon, even though I had no involvement in the project.[3]"

Regardless, on some occasions, limited information from the comics is used on the wiki—if a DCAU original character goes unnamed in the show itself. Examples include Dottie, Tayko and Weasel from Batman Beyond.

Non-Fiction Comics

Dark Knight: A True Batman Story

Dark Knight: A True Batman Story is an auto-biographical graphic novel written by Paul Dini based on his mugging in 1993. The comic features details from the production of Batman: The Animated Series and Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, including a multiple-page re-telling of an episode Paul had pitched that would have feature Morpheus and Death of the Endless from Neil Gaiman's Sandman

The Comic Book History of Animation

Published by IDW, Issue #5 of the series features a single page section about the development of Batman: The Animated Series, complete with quotes from producer Bruce Timm.

Finding Batman

The 2022 DC Pride anthology featured an autobiographical story written by Kevin Conroy going into detail regarding how his life as a gay man living through the AIDs crisis impacted his portrayal of Batman when first joining the series. Following the release, Conroy would thank fans for their support, saying "Whenever you share something that personal, you risk, and you all made that risk so worthwhile, because the support and appreciation has been extraordinary; I just wanted to make sure you knew that."[17]

Batman Beyond

After the introduction of Terry McGinnis as a future Batman in the mainstream universe, the Batman Beyond franchise was revitalized, but this time, as a continuation of the DC Animated Universe. They were first published as digital comics under the names Batman Beyond, Superman Beyond and Justice League Beyond, and written by J.T. Krul, Adam Beechen, Derek Fridolfs and Dustin Nguyen. When discussing his approach to continuity, Beechen would note:

"I'm mostly beholden to the animated series' continuity, and I'm the only one working in it, so I can kind of cherry-pick what elements of current print continuity to mention. But when I do, I find it's best to check with the Editorial Batcave at DC so they know what I'm up to and can make sure I'm not throwing off anything they have in their plans.[...]Our hope is that, by tying the series just enough to mainstream continuity through these little "drop-in" references, we'll attract more mainstream readers who might not otherwise give it a chance, and who will then regard it as sort of an island from the event tie-ins. A universe that crosses over with the mainstream universe just a little bit, like two circles in a Venn diagram.[15]"

The series was rebooted again by authors Kyle Higgins and Christos N. Gage, and has also referred to to as continuing the continuity of the animated universe.[18][19][20] though stripped back from the mainstream elements seen in Beechen's run before. As explained by Higgins:

"All the continuity of the cartoon stands, and I’m doing my best to make the book feel like it’s nothing less than a lost season of the show. We’re not connected to the New 52 in any way.[21]"

"There are certain elements in our series that are informed by Adam Beechen's run on Batman Beyond [1.0], that happened before ours. And there are other things that Adam did that are more directly influenced by DC-proper continuity, and that's where it gets a little more…what's continuity and what's not? So we always go back to the show.[22]"

According to Gage, the writers were allowed to pitch any idea they wanted "just as long as it doesn’t violate the continuity that’s already been established for the Beyond universe."[23]

When asked in 2015 for his thoughts regarding the continuity of Batman Beyond comics, Bruce Timm would respond:

"I have read a few of the Batman Beyond comics, and I’ve gone, “Oh, that’s okay, but it’s not what I would have done with them.” And again, it’s not a value judgment. It just doesn’t interest me since I am part of those characters, integral to that team that created that world. I just have to think of it as not canon.

To me, the Batman Beyond comics are not my Batman Beyond. It’s gone beyond that. If its officially part of the DC universe continuity, great. More power to them, but it’s not my Batman Beyond.[24]"

In 2015, DC would designated this as "Earth 12" through Grant Morrison's Multiversity Guidebook. Rather than attaching the series to the cartoon, the Guidebook states that Earth 12 has "a timeline running slightly in advance of Earth-0". The world of the Justice Lords as represented in the 2.0 iterations of the comic are said to originate from Earth-50. Despite the noted attachment to Earth-0, Grant's "Multiverse Orrery relationships" graphic found in the Deluxe Edition release of Multiversity places Earth-12 in an area labeled "The Cartoon Rim" with a line labeled "The Animated Good/Evil Axis" running across the map from it to Earth-50. Additionally, when DC introduced the "Dark Multiverse" in 2016, Earth -12 was debuted as a dark reflection of it's main counterpart.

In 2023, the Milestone 30th Anniversary Special used "DC Animated Universe" and "Earth 12" interchangeably when referring to the setting of "Static Beyond". Despite this, Static is portrayed as only 35, younger than either future versions we've seen of the character in Future Shock or The Once and Future Thing Part Two: Time, Warped.

    • "Harley Classic" makes an appearance as a member of The Council of Quinn. The Joker also has a cameo.

    • A Batman: The Animated Series style Joker appears in a crowd of different versions of the character.

    • Issues #25-27 featured multiversal versions of Harley Quinn, including the classic animated form.
