Knowing the interrogation of J'onn J'onzz would require the skills of an expert, Vandal Savage called for Josef. Josef took the job gladly, and used various methods of torture — most notably electroshock — on the Martian. After he left the cell to fetch his "special tools", he instructed the guards not to enter. They did enter, however, when they heard a faint plea for help coming from within the cell. There, they found Colonel Josef, tied up to the same table where J'onn J'onnz had been when he arrived. J'onn continued to use the disguise of Josef for some time to search the halls of Savage's headquarters.
