Bud and Lou[1] were a pair of hyenas owned by the Joker and Harley Quinn. Harley was their primary caretaker, and she affectionately referred to them as her "babies."
Background information[]
- Bud and Lou are named after the comedy duo Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. The basic idea of Joker having hyenas as pets was later carried over to numerous other media, although he had previously owned a hyena named "Giggles" in the 1977 Filmation animated series The New Adventures of Batman.
- Per the DVD commentary for Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, the addition of the character Woof, a gene-spliced hybrid of man and hyena as a member of the Jokerz gang was a direct homage to Bud and Lou.
