Bucky has attended the Sorben Institute, but his record had a following of "misdirected energies, a problem with authority and a certain disregard for others." He has been trying to prove the value of his Inductance Controller, which can control any object that give off an inductance circuit, with the proper schematics to the dean of the Institure, Dr. Donald Tannor. He does a trial run by causing all the machines around Tannor's office to go haywire, only to be banned from the premises. He then hears Zeta imitate his voice so perfectly that he becomes inquisitive. He manages to identify Zeta as a rogue infiltration unit and managed to hack the NSA database for schematics so that he could control the synthoid's motor functions. At first, he uses Zeta to covertly destroy other people's inventions, only to later learn that Tannor had copied the remote to win the Innovation Awards. Angered, he sets Zeta on Tannor, intending to scare him into admitting that he stole his invention and others, as well as being a parasite, which he broadcasted to the entire fair. He then had Zeta advance on Tannor, only for Ro to take control of Tannor's remote to knock Bucky down. Zeta then brought up his saw blades and scared Bucky into promising that he would never use his remote again.

He hacked into the NSA mainframe, learning that they were sending a more advanced unit than Zeta, IU7, to take out weapons dealer Roland De Fleures in San Palago. Seeking to gain respect, he snuck off campus. Because he couldn't attend a flight without adult supervision, he jammed the flight Zeta and Ro were planning to take. Reluctantly, they agreed to accompany Bucky to San Palago. They did impound the Controller to keep him from pulling any mischief.
Bucky later controlled Zeta and Ro's hoverbike to direct them to his house, informing them that his parents had been kidnapped by Tannor. They infiltrate a spa Tannor was operating, learning that he promised the elderly to make them more fit. However, the first patients were turned into man-apes, so Tannor had to call in Bucky's parents, onyl to turn themselves and the next batch into youngsters. they get captured themselves and Bucky is ordered to fix the machine.

Bucky later becomes Zeta and Ro's technical assistant in their run from the NSA, informing them on the weapons being used against them. During one chase, someone jammed Bucky's signals. He managed to find out who was responsible: fans of Zeta. But these ones were planning no stripping Zeta down for parts and one of them was infatuated with Ro. Bucky managed to warn the latter but Zeta was captured by the NSA. Ro managed to locate him at NSA headquarters and asked for schematics of the building. However, she was outside the complex and Bucky refused to reveal his link to her and terminated her call.

Tannor, still bearing a grudge against Bucky for his dismissal from the Institute, kidnapped Bucky's parents. Tannor now operated a rejuvenation spa, but his rejuvenation machine was faulty. The first patients were turned into man-apes; after the Buenaventura's "fixed" the machine, patients were changed into toddlers. With his shady business partners breathing down his neck, Tannor realized only Bucky could properly repair the rejuvenation machine. Bucky called on Zee and Ro, who once again reluctantly agreed, and together they managed to retrieve Bucky's parents and stop Tannor.
Eventually, the NSA managed to trace Bucky's hacks and arrested him, believing that he had a connection to Brother's Day, the terrorist organization believed to have reprogrammed Zeta. Luckily, he activates a hidden transmitter to lure Zeta and Ro to rescue him, all the while avoiding questions from Agent Bennet. He tricks Agent West into setting him free, distracting him with a vidgame, while downloading all info on the government databanks and causing the jet he was on to rock. West soon catches on, forcing him to run. Bucky then runs into Ro, learning that Zeta had fell out of a decompressed hole shot by West. They then escape the plan on an escape pod, and soon finds Zeta clinging to the hull of the plane. They catch him and try to outrun the plane, only to be hit by an EMP pulse. Zeta managed to reboot the pod, enabling to hide in the nearby city. Once settled, Bucky installed a variable inductance circuit on Zeta to prevent the NSA from using his remote on Zeta again. As he is now a fugitive, Bucky hides with his uncle in the tech underground, promising to call his friends himself.

Bucky Buenaventura was a young technological genius.

History

Youth

Bucky Buenaventura[1] was the son of scientists and inventors Rudy and Gloria Buenaventura. Born and raised in New Mexico, Bucky soon found he was considerably smarter than his parents, and had to fix all their faulty contraptions. Instead of seeing him as a good thing, they were unable to handle him. So his parents sent Bucky to the Sorben Institute.[2]

Nuisance

At the Sorben Institute, he came to a conflict with the others—he was by far the youngest, and arguably the smartest of the scientists employed by the Institute. One of his most powerful inventions—the inductance controller—caused his temporary banishment from the institute as a trial run in dean Donald Tannor's office caused all the machinery to go haywire.

On his way out, he first saw Zeta. Upon hearing the synthoid's speech synthesizer, Bucky concluded that Zeta was a robot, and hacked NSA files to find out more. Upon seeing Zeta's schematics, he though it'd be a good way to get back at everyone at the Institute. With his Inductance controller, he hijacked Zeta's motor functions. At first, he used Zeta's weapons to destroy his colleagues' inventions, but after he learned Tannor stole the Controller's designs to win the Innovation Awards, he turned his attention to his former dean. Angered, he set Zeta on Tannor, intending to scare him into admitting that he stole his invention and others, which he broadcasted to the entire fair. He then had Zeta advance on Tannor, but Ro took control of Tannor's remote to knock Bucky down. Zeta then brought up his saw blades and scared Bucky into promising that he would never use his remote again.[3]

After Tannor was fired, the campus hammered down on Bucky even more when he caused an explosion in a science lab. The new dean suspended him and locked him in his room, stripped of Net access. However, he had a backup and went cruising around the net.

When the team confronted IU7, Bucky recovered his remote but found out that IU7 had an override and was thus immune to the device. He made up for it by controlling various machinery to throw IU7 into an arsenal in the docks, which exploded.[4]

Bucky called on Zee and Ro, who once again reluctantly agreed, and together they managed to retrieve Bucky's parents and stop Tannor.[2]

Ally

Bucky eventually got on friendlier terms with Ro, and provided her with updates on the NSA's actions. During a chase, his signal jammed and lost contact with Zee and Ro. He found out it was in fact the work of three "fans" of Zeta—Meg, Plug and Buss—who offered shelter to the two fugitives. However, Bucky learned their actual plan—stripping Zeta and selling him for parts. He managed to warn Ro, but the NSA arrived and captured Zeta.[5] Ro tracked the NSA to a nearby government facility, but Bucky refused to help her, fearing contact via an unprotected VidPhone would lead the NSA to him.[6] This led Ro to hold a grudge towards Bucky for a while until she ultimately forgave him, when he risked himself being captured and exposed in order to help a broken down Zeta.[7]

Eventually, the NSA did trace Bucky's hacks and arrested him, believing that he had a connection to Brother's Day. Upon his arrest, he activated a hidden transmitter linked with Zeta, to alert him to his peril. Ro was once again reluctant to come to Bucky's aid, but Zeta reminded her that Bucky had helped them so many times in the past[1]—including with the tracking of Ro's brother,[8] that they owed him.

In the mean time, Agent Bennet had Bucky boarded on a plane, and commenced his questioning. Much to the special agent's annoyance, Bucky shrugged all the questions off. Bennet left and ordered West to guard him. Bucky easily recognized the incompetence of West, and used it to his advantage. After some small talk about games (especially Sentries of the Last Cosmos), Bucky convinced West to untie him, and Bucky distracted him with a VidGame. Bucky downloaded the jet's data into his Inductance controller, and escaped as he took over the plane's control. Making his getaway, he ran straight into Ro. Though Bucky lost his Inductance controller, Ro and Bucky managed to get to an escape pod, and retrieved Zeta who was fighting with Bennet and Rush on the plane's hull. Back on the ground, Bucky installed a variable inductance circuit so that Zeta was also immune to the Inductance controller, now in possession of the NSA.[1]

For his escape from captivity, Bucky was considered a fugitive, and had to go into hiding. Luckily, he could rely on an uncle in the tech underground.[1]

Abilities and equipment

Although himself lacking in any particular physical abilities, Bucky possessed incredible skills in the field of science and technology. It was this that allowed him to invent the inductance controller, which he used to control Zeta and any other piece of technology he could download blueprints of. This also extended to computer wizardry, as evidenced when he effortlessly hacked into the NSA files in order to get Zeta's blueprints.[3]
