It gave us black canary and green arrow and made it like the comics, which is a good thing. The thing that holds JL/JLU back is that it isn't inspired by the 90s comics and media like BTAS and STAS were and even STAS is the defintive version of the character, it's like the Bryne version of the character, the depowered aspect makes it harder to compete with the other versions despite that being a very difficult part of the character, the fleshicers are considered superior. Along with changing brainac from being part of an alien species as it gives superman less tie ins to LOSH, The LOSH show on KIds WB by James tucker and micheal jelenic felt like the definitive version of the team as it was covering silver age in season 1 and bronze age in season 2. But STAS was pretty good as using kirby stuff, scifi esque adventures and finding there own spin brainiac(contradicts what i said earlier), it got cancelled just as it was getting into lois and supermans relationship. BUt back to JLU it feels more inspired by the 00s morrison which is why it isn't considered the definitve JL show but also the fact there was never a wonder woman show but I do like there take on WW and Hawkgirl instead of Hawkman but most media never use him well, The Batman had the more tradtional take on JL with there line up including Hal Jordan instead of John Stewart, Martain manhunter as a detective like the JL the new frontier and probably his early comic appearances. I guess what im saying is you cant please all the fans. ALso the DC live action and animated movies give off a what ifs better or direct adapations of the comics
Direct adaptions
Batman/Superman Public Enemies
Batman/Superman
Batman Year One
JL New Frontier
Batman Under The Red Hood
Batman The Killing Joke
Dark Knight Returns
All Star Superman
Almost direct adaptions but added stuff
Superman Vs the elite
Superman Red Son
Batman The Long Halloween
Batman Hush
Adapting storylines or characters with there own spin
Superman Doomsday
Wonder Woman
JL Doom
Green Lantern First Flight
Green Lantern Emerald Knights
Batman Gotham By Gaslight
Batman Soul of the dragon
JL Crisis On Infinite Earths
Original canon
JL VS Fatal Five
Batman and Harley Quinn
JL Gods and Monsters
Batman Gotham Knights
These are just the Bruce Timm ones, Besides maybe Spectacular Spiderman and Avengers EMH, finding the BTAS equivalent is nearly impossible. I will say I loved Gotham by Gaslight, JL Infinite Crisis(a rescripted JLU movie)
JL/JLU will always be the 5 season mega show , adapting the original seven and Green Arrow right. Secret Origins and Twilight remains my favorite premieres. It just felt the team missed some oppurtunities like having Kyle Rayner show up more or Nightwing (that was a batman embargo thing granted I couldn't see the BTAS characters in JLU, maybe Alfred) If it had a season 6 they would've rebranded it and I'm unsure which roster would use. I believe the Atom would work, I actually think trying to make the original 7 more prominent again like the JL infinity comic
Anyway I still perfer JL, JLU was anthology and you didnt know what you were getting each week. There LOSH episode was weak
The Batman gets a lot of flack but season 1 was basic somewhat mediocre but the rest of it was always experimenting and tweaking itself, granted the character arc with Bruce was well done in season 1 and 2, I just wish it had more of a climax but the DAVE episode callsback his origin. Anyway anyof the non dcau shows tt, LOSH BTAB
LOSH season 2 and The Batman season 4, both retooled season by Micheal Jelenic, Teen Titans season 5 was very comicbook lore based after 4 seasons of just the main 5 and I actually like it better then JLU, I love the first season of tt
BTAB was alright, it got goofier and goofier as it went along, and I like the superman episodes alot
I think this with the infinity comic negates BB,
Batman TAS season 1 65 episodes
Superman tas vol 1
Batman Beyond season 2
Superman tas vol 2
JL season 1
JL season 2
BAtman Beyond season 3
Batman Beyond season 1
Batman tas season 2
JLU season 2
JLU season 1
Batman tas season 3
New Adventures of Batman
JLU season 3
I prefer JL, Jonz does more in JL, without that third season of JLU there wouldn't be enough flash or even Jonz episode. I warmed to JLU concept and consider it both incarnations one show because the look, designs and voice acting are the same. episodes like The balance, to another shore, resolve character relationships and arcs. But I think expanding the cast worked for the retool I prefer the original 7,
Lana lang :P voted for Batgirl
watching Twilight and then destroyer, it wasn't Darkseids greatest moment. If Divided we fall was the last episode it was great but didn't let the characters reflect like JLU season 3 dvd. Nothing really parallels Secret Origin except starcrossed. I think the main flaws is Destroyer felt rushed but they saved the planet in 1 episode, and the last 5 minutes is a better send off because it gives them time to reflect like Starcrossed. Starcrossed would've been a great series finale with the votes but it felt like the shayera/GL show. Divided we fall was more of a superman finale and we didn't really see a more peaceful time for the league plus I think we should've seen the metro tower more, so each finale has it's strengths and weaknesses. I think the complaints on season 3 is the cheesy legion of doom that took itself out before the finale with no heroes but Lex carried it and it worked.those 3 years of unlimited was the lex show
Does it bug anyone that Stan Berkowitz gets story editor credits for JLU episodes 14-26 despite leaving after the first year of JLU, they must've known considering they change the credits everey episode on the board artists, was it a writers union thing?
The whole last season feels neccssary to have more flash and hawkgirl spotlight episodes
Batman and Hawkgirl
Batman and Flash
Hawkgirl and Flash
Martin Manhunter and wonder woman
The trinity in gorilla city
It helped flesh out the remaining league members
The last five minutes are perfect but it and alive are messy, doing an alien invasion in one episode was awesome but having darkseid come back was lacking, granted we get the best Lex Luthor scenes, it was his show,
Tim Daly for The Late Mr Kent episode, plus he has this nuance George Newbern didn't have. Kevin Conroy is obvious but he changes his voice from Batman Beyond onward and in the harley quinn movie brings it back. Susan Isenberg was great too, loved her performance in JLU For The man who has everything, This Little Piggy, The Balance, To another shore
It did retread Once and Future Thing, took away Jonz happy ending in JLU, Batman and Wonder Woman get serious, GL and Vixen break up rather then stay together which on the dvd the crew thought didn't feel right.
JLU made a future where batman beyond doesn't happen possible, in Once and Future Thing Old Bruce doesn't even remember him going to the future and meeting his other self and JLU bruce meets warhawk and tells Shayera about him, the timestream was messed up so only GL and Bats remember.
Batman Adventures season three comic introduces Waller and the prototype batman beyond suit?
I believe that Dwayne McDuffie left an opening so the DCAU batman beyond future doesn't happen by accident and that ROTJ doesn't happen. Granted Bruce Timm made JL VS Fatal Five which was decent but felt more like a spinoff JLU movie, it's script was also really emotional and not in JLU usually alpha male smackdown writing to quote supergirl and now with Kevin Conroy gone we'll never see another DCAU project or even BB film
Where's Teen Titans (Glen Murakami) and LOSH (James Tucker), Zeta Project (Bob Goodman), I know there not DCAU but they were made during the golden era of DC shows. Brave and the Bold, Young Justice, The Batman I didn;t count because the influence isn't there. JLU should be considered a different show.
We got BB which will last forever in stream,
Teen Titans made into a smash hit with adapting comicstories and anime exxagrations
Static worked for kids wb as a more kid friendly teen superhero show after Batman Beyond
LOSH second season appeased kids wb, it was darker and probably would've been a classic if it kept going
They tried using a new staff for The Batman and lasted 5 season
We've had some duds beware the batman, by glen murakami
YJ was made for a way older audience by greg weisman
I think superheroes willl go the tt go route, total drama. fosters PPGare being rebooted as preschool age approprate
Phil broussa/james tucker universe was a good experiment not sure if sales were there
I like butch lukic dc movies but they seem redunate like the GL animated series
JLAction was the other show besides the batman to fire new writers
YJ brought a bunch of new writers but how will the dc universe work without Bruce Timm,Alan Burnett, Glen Murakami, JAmes Tucker
Greg Weisman and YJ wasnt the answer
Jim Kreig might be as he's bringing in Spiderman TAS writers and hes produced some good movies with BT but his movies have been fun but lukewarm and slow to release
Which do you prefer, as much as I like JLU it might've had too much action and not enough story. I liked the 90s BTAS-BB era writing. As praised as Dwayne was on Static he only created the character and writer the first handful of static comics and then became the editor along with the whole milestone line. Icon was where he wrote the most milestone universe stuff and his modern run on JLA. In animation he was involved as a writer not producer or story editor that was ALan Burnett, John Semper Jr and Chirstopher Simmons , he wrote all the rubberband man episodes all good episodes and his first episode he wrote in a day. He knew how to write big scale character pieces which is why he was brought on to JL season 2. he wrote crisis on 2 earths and all star superman both great movies. But I always felt JLU was a little hollow, it was about an arc and again maybe too much action, again but it had a variety of different tones and stories. The way the arc of the original 7 was well handled, espically like the wonder woman hawkgirl episode. I guess to get to the point he was an amazing producer on JLU, he had some faults in his writing or maybe the format wasn't too my tastes. Stan Berkowitz also had this problem as he was producer on JLU year one, He was a fan of the characters and it took some getting used to his style which was a mix of big sets from JL and his own comic knowledge maybe working against him and heavy use of continuity. I wonder what would've happened if the show kept going, they hired Matt Wayne who added some fresh fun in JLU season 3 maybe Jim Kreig and Ernie Altbacker would've been hired or if caped crusader ever airs
